BLUE EYED SOUL: ANDREW LEWIS BAND-THE BLUE ALBUM

ANDREW LEWIS BAND-THE BLUE ALBUM- LP- RICHMOND RECORDS- 1977
I found this record in the jazz section in a local record spot and threw it on the turntable expecting late-70's fusiony jazz/funk/rock. But I was surprised to hear more straight up soul/funk type tunes, certainly with a jazz/rock influence (hey it's an all white band with one brother on vocals) but definitely not the crazy fusion sound I was expecting. I wanted to post the whole LP up here, but upon further listening there were a couple of skips on my copy, so I picked my two favorite joints on here to share instead. "Midnite Man" is a very dope horn-heavy with some potential sample moments, while "A New Day" is a slice of some real nice mellow soul. And if anybody has a cleaner copy they'd like to share with me, please let me know (oduckworth@gmail.com).

One of the few regrets I have in my career was that I quit the band prior to making this album. Of course, needing a hernia operation at the time really drove that timetable! None-the-less, I left to become a better jazz saxophonist and if ever I made a sacrifice "for my art" it was when I left ALB. That band started my career and I will never underestimate the value of that experience. I was very proud of my friends when this album was released. It's personally ironic that right next to the picture of the album cover is a picture of Cannonball Adderley who became my biggest influence after leaving the band! Pretty cool.

This was an awesome experience playing some horn on this record alongside these incredible musicians, both pre & post The Blue Album. I'm excited to hear that our original producer, Ken, has so generously gone to the trouble to re-master this buried treasure. Just prior to working with the group I recall seeing the band, in its infancy, playing live. I was completely mesmerized! The next six years with these guys were so much fun. Great players and great people. Hope you guys are all well.

I learned of ALB in the late 70's. Gotta be one of the best groups to ever come out of Richmond. While their songs were nearly perfect, it was their spin on 'Peter Gunn' that I thought most showed the depth of their individual musical versatility. Alas, they disbanded after 'Blue' similar to the way the original BS&T did after their 'Child is Father to the man' debut LP.

Two great groups, separated only by time and circumstance. Can you imagine what their collective talents might have produced? Would readily buy ALB's album again!

Bevin,

Holy crap! I never knew you played with ALB! Peter Gunn is the reason I took up playing the bass. You may not remember me, but you produced a lot of spots for me at Alpha and IYE back in the day. Just noodling around on the web and found this. Say hey if you ever see this. email me a vbjazzbass@hotmail That is if you remember Mike Ritchie from Webb & Athey Athey/Martin Webb and MSI.

I would never have had the chance of singer for these incredible musicians without the efforts of Dennis Huber who discovered me. That one single day turned my life around and made me who I am today. I don't regret a moment of this opportunity to have been able to pursue my dream of musical perfection. These guys almost got me there. I will always remember and cherish our accomplishments...with love and fond memories......

I used to work at the Farmers Market Restaurant in Petersburg Va. back in the 1970 as a part-time worker still in high school...and watch them play them many times.

What a great group of musicians!!!
Just found their album in Tokyo Japan after a long search.

Weighing in here......

I remember when I was trying to think up a name for the band and saw my buddy Jim Cole in his Andrew Lewis HS Band t-shirt. Voila, I went with that.

ALB meant so much to all of us. We worked our heads and tails off. Linwood, do you remember auditioning for the band at the Union Jack? I heard your voice and said this is the stuff! Such good players in the band, and I have enormous respect for each of them and what we did together. Lot of love, lot of fighting, lot of caring, but through it all, my heart for these guys never changed. I will never forget the reunion in 1995 and watch the tape from time to time.

Les, your career has been stellar, and I knew that you would do well. You define woodshed.....

My vision for the band when I started it was to do something that was different, that embraced funk, R&B and jazz. Although my time ended with the band prior to the album, I think the trajectory continued. It was a landmark for the band, for the individuals involved and for the legacy.

Thankful I had the opportunity to spend several years with all of you.

I have been listening to cuts from this album and am keen to find a copy. It's always interesting to hear from the band members. I,m intrigued as to the identity of vocalst Linwood. Any clues as to who he is?

WOW!! I just stumbled upon this and I can say without reservation that the years i spent in ALB were some of the best I had. It was a band of brothers and we sure had a lot of fun and made some pretty good music too!!

ALB was every where in Richmond during the late 70's. Best band ever to dance to. That was a time like no other time since. Dancing has not been the same. Those were the days I could dance all night.

If you like this album, you will love Robbin Thompson and Steve Bassett “Together”. ALB plays on it.

Talking of good times. I had a great time working for the band. I was a roadie for ALB and it was sometimes hard work but we got it done. I do miss the fellas. Some of the best guys I ever met. Randy

RANDY! Great to know you're still kicking! You weren't just a roadie. You were family. We couldn't have done all that work without you and your great humor and character. I'm proud to know you and to have wires with you. I hope life has been great to you. you deserve the best. Happy New Year!
